Dr. Robert Adamson
Dr. Rob Adamson is the medical director of the Cardiac Transplant Program at Sharp Memorial Hospital. He specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery and vascular surgery. He is affiliated with Sharp Community Medical Group and Sharp Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Adamson received his undergraduate degree at the University of Utah, where he also completed his internship and residency in general surgery. He went on to complete a fellowship in cardiac transplantation at Stanford University Medical Center.
Dr. Adamson began his practice in San Diego in 1987. He is board certified in thoracic surgery and is a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.
Dr. Walter Dembitsky
Dr. Walter Dembitsky is the senior surgeon of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at Sharp Memorial Hospital. He specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery and vascular surgery. He is affiliated with Sharp Community Medical Group and Sharp Memorial Hospital.
He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Missouri, where he also completed his surgical internship. Dr. Dembitsky completed a general surgery residency and was chief resident in general surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. He then went on to complete a residency in cardiothoracic surgery and was chief resident in cardiothoracic surgery at Washington University. Dr. Dembitsky completed research fellowships at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Dembitsky has been practicing in San Diego since 1978. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a noted researcher and author on topics related to the use of mechanical assist devices for heart failure.
Dr. Brian Jaski
Dr. Brian Jaski, FACC, is a double board-certified cardiologist and the medical director of the Advanced Heart Failure and Clinical Cardiology Program at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Dr. Jaski specializes in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. He is affiliated with Sharp Community Medical Group and Sharp Memorial Hospital.
In practice since 1985, Dr. Jaski received his undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He was a resident in internal medicine at the University of Chicago Hospital and was a clinical research fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and at Harvard Medical School.
Board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology, Dr. Jaski is also a noted author and researcher in topics related to heart failure and cardiac transplantation.
His goal is to care for the complexities of the heart with compassion, understanding and the trained hands of experience. He sees it as his mission to help cardiac patients feel better and live longer.
Dr. Jaski works to provide quality cardiovascular services to each patient and to support treatment programs designed and supervised by board-certified cardiologists.
Dr. Peter Hoagland
Dr. Peter Hoagland, FACC, is the medical director of heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation at Sharp Memorial Hospital. He is affiliated with Sharp Community Medical Group and Sharp Memorial Hospital.
He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston. Dr. Hoagland completed his cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and Bayside Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Dr. Hoagland has served as chief of staff at Sharp Memorial Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Cardiovascular Disease. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology and a published author on the topics of aortic stenosis, cardiac transplant, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction.
Dr. Hoagland’s goal is to offer his patients quality cardiovascular services in order to address a full range of heart conditions.
Dr. Hirsch Mehta
Dr. Hirsch Mehta, FACC, is a board-certified cardiovascular disease specialist and the associate medical director of heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation at Sharp Memorial Hospital. He is also affiliated with Sharp Community Medical Group.
Dr. Mehta earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California with honors and his medical degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia. He completed his residency and fellowship at Scripps Clinic in San Diego. He finished training at Stanford University, where he focused on advanced heart failure, cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, under the guidance of renowned cardiologist Dr. Sharon Hunt.
Dr. Mehta is board certified in cardiovascular diseases, advanced heart failure, cardiac transplantation, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. He is an active participant in the American College of Cardiology, where he serves on the committee for high-risk surgery within the Heart Failure Council. In addition, he has served as a member of the program committee for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. Dr. Mehta has coauthored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters relating to heart failure, cardiac imaging and mechanical support. In addition, he lectures and maintains an active research interest in right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Mehta became a physician because he believes that at its core medicine is about developing meaningful relationships with people and helping them live successful lives. He finds the act of sharing this with his patients extremely fulfilling.
Dr. Mehta strives to help each patient overcome what has ailed them using all the tools that modern medicine has available, and in the process, to assist them in achieving an improved quality of life. His goal is to keep his patients healthy so they can do what they love and enjoy a fulfilling life.
Dr. Charles Athill
Dr. Charles Athill is a board-certified cardiac electrophysiologist affiliated with Sharp Community Medical Group and Sharp Memorial Hospital. He specializes in heart rhythm disorders, such as atrial fibrillation (AFib).
In practice since 1998, Dr. Athill received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and his fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Athill knew he wanted to focus on heart rhythm disorders when his father died from complications of AFib. He felt there was a void in AFib treatment and turned his focus to learning about basic arrhythmia mechanisms, how these arrhythmias developed and ways of treating these types of arrhythmias.
Dr. Athill feels that being a doctor gives him the unique opportunity to help people on a daily basis, and he loves hearing his patients say, “I feel well.” He views health as one of the most important things in life, and finds joy in helping people to feel better.
Dr. Karl Limmer
Dr. Karl Limmer is a cardiothoracic surgeon who has practiced at Sharp Memorial Hospital since 2014. He specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery and vascular surgery. He is affiliated with Sharp Community Medical Group.
Dr. Limmer earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his medical degree from Temple University. He completed his internship and residency at the University of California San Diego Medical Center, followed by fellowships at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He specializes in minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures and is one of a select number of heart surgeons in the country who performs the hybrid maze procedure .
Dr. Limmer has coauthored numerous research papers and book chapters relating to adult chest surgery. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology and is a candidate member for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Dr. Limmer’s practice encompasses the surgical treatment of all types of cardiac, thoracic and vascular diseases. He performs cardiac surgery procedures, including operations on all of the heart valves and bypasses for coronary artery disease, as well as operations for heart failure such as the implantable left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and heart transplantation.
When appropriate, Dr. Limmer provides his patients with the most advanced minimally invasive surgical treatments, which reduce pain and allow for a speedy recovery.
Dr. Limmer has a special interest in treating atrial fibrillation, and offers his patients at Sharp Memorial Hospital access to clinical trials focused on defining the best treatments and determining the best way to reduce the risk of stroke.
